Recently my friends Andy and Sarah have been joking with me over the continuing debate of U2's faith and Bono's social action. (Personally...I'm not sure we should   be debating it, but the press seems to always fuel the fire. Anyway Ive discovered an article largo mall movies in a Canadian newspaper, so here just for them, are some interesting quotes.
Bono's faith: It is what gives me the strength to get up every day and put forth a hundred percent of my energy. largo mall movies --Bono (Musician, 5/83) Christians are hard to tolerate, I don't know how Jesus does it...I'm one of them. --Bono (Bono's Jubilee 2000 Diary) People seem to think Christians are incredibly pious, arrogant, superior individuals, but that's not true at all--I'm a very normal, very real person. --The Edge (Star Hits, Spring 1985) I am a Christian and not ashamed of that. But trying to explain my beliefs, largo mall movies our beliefs, takes away from it. I have more in common with somebody who doesn't believe at all than I do with most Christians. I don't mind saying that. --Larry Mullen (Time, April 27, 1987) [Adam] Clayton, who alone has not announced formally for Christianity, largo mall movies says simply that for journalists 'religion was an easy angle, a hook to hang a story on. We all believe in much the same things but don't express ourselves in the same way.' (Time, April 27, 1987)
Bono: Well, to me faith in Jesus Christ that is not aligned with social justice, that is not aligned with the poor--it's nothing. How can you read the Gospel of Luke the physician and call yourself a Christian and have health cuts? How can you not work towards the ends of social justice? One thing I think people forget is how radical Christ was. People were put to death for the idea that all men were created equal, which meant essentially that Jewish peasants were equal to Roman emperors. That was radical. And to me, there's nothing more radical or revolutionary largo mall movies than love--the love two people have for each other for instance. Because it's so hard to find. My version of love is not soft, it's hard. You know, the Christ I read about in the Gospels is steel not straw. (p. 142)
On Aids Bono commented: Christ's example is being demeaned by the church if they ignore the new leprosy, which is AIDS. The church is the sleeping giant here. If it wakes up to what's really going on in the rest of the world, it has a real role to play. If it doesn't, it will be irrelevant. 17 Comment(s).
Mckerny the wind up merchant....should read bono's editorial of the'Independent' - i think bono is a sound Christian role model, he doesn't largo mall movies pretend to be perfect or even try to act perfect he is himself and surely that is what Jesus would have us be? o:)
Having become a Christian in 1992, my early experiences of Christian culture, and Christians in general, was that the identikit of Christianity was the entire U2 back catalogue largo mall movies (along with Simple Minds, Deacon Blue, etc) doc martin boots, a baggy fisherman's jumper and if space permitted, a bible. I actually heard a story that after a main Sunday morning service at Greenbelt, the gathering spontaneously broke into the U2 classic “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” ..! Having no interest in rock music (my musical background was the whole Soul, R&B, House thing) no desire largo mall movies to wear the uniform, but with a desire to follow Jesus and not to return to my old lifestyle and background, I was torn and felt distinctly out of place. U2 are therefore simply the whipping boy for my early dissatisfaction/confusion with the church, its inability to “be all things to all men” and the conformist, cliquey, subcultures that Christians create. What are we achieving in the NW of England today, is it 1% of people in church? Shouldn’t that make us sit up and think 99% of people view what we’re offering as totally irrelevant? Why is that and what are we doing to contribute to that? The cheesy but true statement by Maxwell largo mall movies is correct: “madness is doing the same thing but expecting different results” … is it time for a change? I actually think that U2 music is ok, my kids love it, and that the cigar smoking Bono is a legend for the work he does. By their fruit you shall know them, and Bono’s impact, influence and work ca
